A Gentle Reminder

Last night, while out to dinner, I had a wake up call.

Lately I have become a ‘why me’ person.  My husband and I have had a string of bad luck, which has been causing me to feel very bad for myself.

While waiting for our food, I began to cry. Looking around, I realized that I have a great life. I have a home, a loving husband, a caring family, and friends who would do anything for me. Although things are rough, my problems are temporary. There are plenty of people in this world whose problems are permanent, and yet they go about their lives happily. They never ask ‘why me.’ They accept the hands they are dealt and make the most out of life.

Things aren’t awesome right now, but they are fixable. I just needed a little reminder to put my life in perspective.

  1. I think it’s ok to feel like this sometimes, but then yes, to think about and appreciate all we have! Hope it works out – hang in there! This piece was short and directly to the point – I think it was the perfect structure to fit your point.

  2. It happens to all of us – the run of bad luck and the feeling of “why me”. And then, before you know it, things turn around. It might not be a full on run of good luck, but even neutral can be good news.

  3. I agree with you, and also gently disagree. All we know is our own life, and while I, too, am surrounded by goodness and ease and plenty, I realize that there are solid reasons why it’s normal for me to cry while my food is cooking. Life is hard. You’re not doing anything wrong, and bad luck stinks. Best of luck to you and hope that tomorrow starts a new pattern–one of better luck. Sending love to you across the cyber world!

  4. One time a friend shared this wisdom with me: Pain is pain and hurt is hurt. There is no measuring your hurt against my hurt. Whatever we are going through is ours and cannot be compared to another. Peace be with you!

  5. I’m sorry you’re having a tough time right now. I’ve been there. I think asking “Why me?” is natural and the key is to not live in that space for long. It’s great to step back and look at the situation with fresh eyes, realizing and appreciating what you do have, like you did today. Sometimes the rough times help us adjust our perspective.

  6. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed but not to stay there! You can do it–as you say, things are tough but fixable! I’m rooting for you!
